The Country of a Thousand Islands

CROATIA ISLANDS

Losinj Island in Croatia

Losinj has 2 islands (Mali Losin and Veli Losinj) and they are both one of the sunniest islands in Croatia. The islands of Losinj (pronounced low-sheen) are located in the northern Adriatic Sea, and almost due south of the main Croatian city of Rijeka. Losinj is connected to the island of Cres by a small bridge in the town of Osor. There are daily ferries from Rijeka to Mali Losinj that take four hours; and in July and August there is a catamaran service from Venice. Daily buses run from Zagreb to Mali Losinj, and take around six hours.

Almost 33 kilometers long, and 5 kilometers wide, the island covers an area of 78 square kilometers. The largest city, Mali Losinj has just under 10,000 inhabitants, making it one of the largest cities on the Croatian islands. Situated in the Augusta bay, rich in fish, Losinj is one of the best-known sport and fishing locations in the Adriatic.

Because it is blessed with so many sunny days, both islands of Losinj are very popular tourist destination. In the summer you'll hear almost as much conversation in Italian and German as in Croatian, as tourists from those countries are as common as the locals.
